Unit 18 Working with Site-specific Briefs

In this unit we focused on what the definition of a site-specific brief is. I went into detail of what public art is and gave examples of some public art sculptures displayed around big cities such as Liverpool. In Liverpool, I looked into the art of Superlambanana.

The main artists that I have specifically looked at are Claire Brewster, Mark Langan and Chris Gilmour.

American artist Mark Langan uses reclaimed carry gated cardboard boxes to create intricate and unique sculptural pieces. He enjoys the process of taking ordinary materials and transforming them into beautiful pieces of artwork as well as making an environmental statement regarding the use of recyclable material and creating 'green art'.

Chris Gilmour is an English artist specialising on the creation of life-sized sculptures made out of recycled cardboard and glue, using both plain packaging material. His works replicate in painstaking detail many objects and machines out of our ordinary lives, ranging from objects from daily life, such as bicycles, motorbikes, cats, Cafés, chairs, etc. to small models of religious architecture in an iron 'desecration' by the graphics of the packaging; by juxtaposing these religious symbols and the 'profane' icons of modern consumer life and culture such as toothpaste.

I have drawn out silhouettes of individual cats in different positions, and these are the designs that I planned out to place on my triangle design. I have made a maquette type of design to show how I wished to lay out my triangle, with the silhouettes.

A photograph of my final triangle is shown in my sketchbook, along with other triangles made by my classmates (shown below)
