Unit 2 - 2D Visual Communication 3D Visual Communication

Here are some of the most strongest pages that I created in Unit 2 2D Visual Communication and 3D Visual Communication. This project revolved around the theme of Totem Poles, Ceramic artists and the Formal Elements. We focused drawing a still life form from toys, which we would then use to build up a small version of a totem pole.

This is the double page spread that I produced on Totem Poles. The left hand side shows a printed page of four totem pole drawings built up of toys. I thought this would be nice to put in as a background for the description of what a totem pole is. A big and bold title makes the page stand out along with the totem theme pattern that I drew underneath it. On the right hand side is the description of how old totem poles are. A big image of the top of a totem pole backed onto black card is added underneath the title. I initially thought of putting a lot more images onto the page with a little annotation on each but the way I ended up laying it out turned out well. I have again repeated the totem theme pattern onto the second page.

This is a third page that I added onto the double page spread. I have made this fold out of the second page, with black card backed onto it to made it firm. This research page explains what totem poles mean. I decided to add colour onto this page to even out the pattern running along the top and down the side. Two images have also been included. I like how the layout has turned out as it isn't too basic nor does it have much detail on.

I decided to research Native American masks as they obviously relate to totem poles. I chose a couple of images that shows clear detail on each mask, coming from a book I photocopied. I have enlarged the images to a decent scale to avoid any unwanted space.

This is a double page spread research page on the Ceramic artist Emily Myers. Here I have explored how this artist first discovered her natural talent, along with some photographs of her first pieces of work. The second page is about her current work and how she has developed from her previous starting point to where she is now. A few examples of her work are clearly presented underneath the text.

Here are three artists that I have put onto one page. Stephen Fabrico is one specific artist that I focused on the most as he inspired me and gave me some ideas how on I could develop my own piece of work. A box of information is presented along with a fold out piece with some extended information about Stephen Fabrico. The other artist that I researched on was Barbara Hopsworth. This artist created very unique sculptures. Along with other similar artists, she helped to create modern art in Britain. The last artist here is Gordon Baldwin, who is a sculptor potter. He has somehow  moved ceramic towards sculptural forms and away from traditional functional pots. This is shown in the three pictures presented.
