Graphic design is a practical art which helps in communication. Visual information is formed in such a way that it produces a message. This can be done by placing words and pictures in ways that will get the attention of others. People who do graphic design as work are called graphic designers. In printed media, graphic design includes typography, organising illustration, book design, page layout, specifying print.
Graphic design can be done in different media. These include paper, video, labels, and web sites.
"Graphic design" is a vast and varied discipline, using many skills, rules and techniques to be able to provide the right information. It is both a combination of artistic expression and media relations.
Today we had a discussion on graphic design examples that students at Level 3 produced. We got talked through how the work process has to be clear and pristine. The final pieces have to be professionally presented by mounting the work with card and spray-mount. Pritt-stick is not allowed as that's not as strong to hold the piece together.

This is my favourite Graphic Design example as it's basic but also detailed, especially how the designer has created the faces without including the facial expressions. Instead, the hair and face shape is only designed

The strength of the portfolio is the sketchbook, where it mainly has to have mark making and drawing. The presentation is also a significant point as for it being Graphic Design, every single piece of work has to be produced at a very detailed and clean standard. Secondly, the attendance has to be the best. It is difficult to catch up on previous work if missed as a lot of work has to be completed in a limited time.
The weakness of the portfolio, however, is if there is barely any work put into it. Making it a poor presentation. Annotation is an important factor to gaining a high grade and so the more annotation included, the more clearer it makes for the viewer to link things together.
It is important to be clear about the unit title when explaining about the work as it then shows that you know what you're talking about. You appear positive and eager this way.

Idea sheets are important to keep on top of. They show how you have expressed your thoughts and ideas throughout the unit, also how you've developed from one section to the other. It shows that you have explored different things and not only stuck to one particular section, this makes it look very detailed and interesting.

As shown in all the photographs, the final pieces are mounted onto white card. This is to make it appear clear and pristine. No mistakes are allowed to be made when mounting up the work. To mount up the final pieces, the students use spray-mount instead of the ordinary Pritt-stick. This is because the spray-mount sticks much firmer and is also easily flexible.

An average portfolio costs £100 at a minimum. The cost is made up of the portfolio folder itself which is around about £30. This then includes each print, being £6 each for every piece.
